Nowadays, it has been like a mental and emotional tug of war when it comes to switching from one career to another. Anyone can understand how difficult it is to get into a new job, thinking that the working conditions would be better, and then mostly end up on the same winding road that they’ve been to before. This usually happens when one hurriedly decides to quit his/her job, for reasons that may be as reasonable as having an obnoxious employer who undermines his/her skill set, or the more irrational ones like minor work inconveniences.

The golden rule here is to always gather one’s thoughts before making any final decision; step back, take a deep breath, relax, and meditate. Never rush into anything—that’s the most basic principle in all of life’s aspects.
While it is perfectly easier to just go out there and begin one’s quest for the right job, a wise person would hold his horses and look within first. It is important to get a thorough grasp of one’s true personality so that he/she will be able to know what he/she can offer to a company and what one truly expects from his/her chosen career path.
One needs to clear his/her mind and focus on the pros and cons of his/her previous job and the overall work experience. Since one would most likely end up with a long list, it would be best to get a sheet of paper and divide it into two columns. On the left column, list down all the advantages of the previous job. It may also include personal accomplishments and achievements one has done during that employment. On the right column, write down all the negative experiences, from horrible co-workers to a demanding schedule. Personal weaknesses or fears related to the job also count.
When making a pros vs. cons list, one must always refrain from biases. It will defeat the whole purpose of studying the situation. In addition, pairing every item on the cons list with an appropriate resolution will be most helpful.
After mulling over the advantages and disadvantages, it is time to decide on priorities. One must be able to clearly identify what is most important. By looking back on what already happened, what should have happened, and what would happen next, a person will be able to know what he/she really wants. Perhaps it would help if one thinks like a kid again. Remember those days when one would stare blankly in to the sky and think about what he/she wanted to be after a decade; like a 10-year-old wishes that he would want to be a fire fighter someday. This is not to say though that one must resort to some form of regression. It is only a way to help a person grasp reality and realize what to do next.
Along with this self-exploration will be a number of realizations, including the person’s key strengths and weaknesses. Whatever qualities that surface upon completion of the list must be applied appropriately. But of course, application must be preceded with planning. Make sure each plan is impeccable—one that is specific, measurable, attainable, and time-bounded.
Career decisions are often, if not always overwhelming, but these guidelines may help ease the burden. By keeping one’s self calm, composed, and rational, a promising career is pretty much on its way.
